How does Foodsmart work?
A Foodsmart dietitian — your personal nutrition coach — will help you create a personalized plan to reach your health goals and give you tools that make it easier to prepare delicious, budget-friendly meals for your family.
During a free nutrition coaching call, your dietitian will help you sign up for an Instacart+ or Walmart+ membership, paid for by Independent Health. Use your membership to order groceries from the comfort of home and have them delivered for free.* You can even use SNAP benefits to pay for your food.

What is Foodsmart?
Foodsmart connects members with registered dietitians through phone or video calls for simple, affordable nutrition support for their unique health goals. Our dietitians are nutrition experts, licensed to support members with common medical conditions — like obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and heart conditions — with nutrition and lifestyle changes. Foodsmart's platform also provides members with tools for meal planning, shopping on a budget, and food delivery.
What is the Food First Program?
Independent Health partners with Foodsmart to bring Medicaid members the Food First program, providing free, unlimited access to nutrition coaching and free grocery delivery for one year with their free one-year membership to Walmart+ or Instacart Express. The membership includes unlimited free delivery on grocery orders over $35. Foodsmart checks if members are eligible for SNAP/EBT benefits and enrolled by the Foodsmart team if applicable. Members can use SNAP/EBT benefits to pay for their Walmart+ and Instacart+ grocery orders through the Foodsamart platform, where they can find meal planning and budgeting tools, and thousands nutritious, low-cost recipes.
Is my dietitian visit covered by insurance?
Yes. Independent Health Medisource and Medisource Connect members can meet with a Foodsmart dietitian by phone or video for personal nutrition coaching for $0 out of pocket.
What can I expect during a dietitian visit?
Your dietitian will start your first nutrition coaching call by asking about your goals, eating habits, medical and family history, food preferences, cooking skills, and more, in order to better understand how they can help. From there, you'll create small, achievable goals and work toward them with support from your nutrition coach! Follow-up visits offer a chance to check in on progress, refine your plan, and get help with any challenges you encounter along the way.
How does Foodsmart help me save money?
When you meet with your dietitian, they'll share strategies for eating well on a budget and cooking with the food you already have on hand. In fact, Foodsmart members save an average of 34% per grocery order. Your dietitain can also help you register for SNAP if you're eligible, and show you how to maximize your benefits. Plus, in the FoodsMART food marketplace, you can find affordable recipes for your budget, compare grocery prices, and have food delivered to your door.
How will this program work with my other providers or care management team?
Working with a dietitian is a wonderful addition to any care management team. We'll work to understand your current medications, practices, and goals, then develop a nutrition plan that can fit easily into your routine.
